Creativity can be tricky to define. But I would say art is even more elusive. Many people do not believe that they are creative or maybe they feel they were as children but have somehow lost their creative spark or connection. I want to push back on that belief and say that everyone is creative. It isn’t something you lose as you get older. It’s always with you. What I’m offering with this series is an inquiry into many ways of looking at what creativity is, what it can be and opening up its limitless possibilities. It is an endless exploration and as you listen you may come up with some ideas I haven’t even mentioned. That’s what I’m talking about. That is creative!
Creativity encompasses many things, it isn’t just about making art. It’s a thread that is woven throughout our life. It’s not just what we do but the way we choose to do it. We were created by our parents and while we’re alive, we design our lives for ourselves and with others.
It’s a physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual process. Maybe you’re making something art related, but you might be making a schedule or doodling while talking to someone or picking out something to wear or telling a story or a joke or experimenting in the kitchen or taking a new way home…
When working on a project we make decisions, we might create a physical thing and then we might feel something about that thing. We might have many feelings about it. We may take some time to think about that thing depending on what it is. If it’s something meaningful to us, we might need to talk about it with others and get some kind of feedback. Or if we share it either as a finished thing or a work in process, it becomes a connection with others.
Through creativity we may choose to connect with others. Maybe we take a class and join a group of people with a common creative interest like writing, dancing, singing or sketching. It can be energizing and inspiring to be around other people while they are creating. Through others we can learn new skills. Maybe they can help us realize something about what we’re doing that’s helpful.
Creativity can be deeply personal and done as a form of emotional process. Some people utilize creative arts therapies with an art therapist. Our own creativity has the potential to open up things that we thought were closed. The work we create in these situations may not ever be seen by anyone else. But this kind of work can be extremely meaningful and beneficial. Not all creative work needs to be shared.
Just as Travel is creative, creativity is also a form of travel. We can get lost in the intricacies of making. We can lose time and lose ourselves as we are absorbed in the process. It’s a wonderful feeling to be in a creative flow.
In this series I will explore different ways of looking at creativity. You can also check out the What is Travel series. I hope you’ll join me on these deep dives into what travel is and what creativity is.
